Daniel’s file told another story.
Grandma had left me an investment account worth $118,000 and a small duplex in Independence, Missouri.
Dad had been named temporary trustee only until I turned twenty-five.
I was twenty-nine.
The duplex had been sold three years earlier.
I had never signed the paperwork.
Daniel obtained copies from the county recorder’s office.
The signature beside my name looked convincing enough to fool a stranger.
It did not fool me.
The sale proceeds had been deposited into an account tied to Hale Home Renovations, the contracting company Dad owned with Caleb.
Dad’s voice hardened.
“Your grandmother wanted the family taken care of.”
“She wrote exactly who she wanted taken care of,” Daniel said. “Emily.”
Mom turned toward Dad.
“Richard?”
