At the mall, my 11-year-old suddenly grabbed my hand and whispered, “Mom—quickly, behind that pillar. Don’t move.”

That was when both she and Daniel went pale.

Margaret recovered first.

“What is this?” she demanded.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

“Why are you here?”

Claire folded her arms.

“Because Laura called me.”

Margaret’s expression changed immediately.

I placed my phone on the kitchen island and played the recording.

Nobody spoke as Margaret’s own voice filled the room.

“Tomorrow morning. They’ll both be gone by eight.”

Then the stranger asked:

“And your son?”

And Margaret replied calmly:

“He leaves at six-thirty.”

When the recording ended, Daniel looked first at his mother, then at me.
