I specifically switched the card in my clutch when we were heading to a restaurant for my sister-in-law’s anniversary. When the bill reached 265 thousand, she announced to the entire hall, “Brother, show everyone how much you love your sister.” My husband proudly reached into my clutch and pulled out a card, but a surprise from his wife was waiting for him…

He swallowed hard, looking sick.

“Well,” I continued. “While you two were busy plotting to spend my savings, Daniel and I were busy reviewing the collateral you used for that secret business loan you took out last year.”

Marissa froze. “What loan?”

“The loan Ethan took out to cover your last boutique expansion,” I explained, acting like a helpful teacher. “The one he secured using his father’s remaining shares in the family trust. The shares he legally wasn’t supposed to leverage without spousal consent.”

Ethan looked like he was going to vomit.

“He defaulted on the interest payments three months ago,” I said. “The bank was about to seize them. But… I bought the debt.”

“You… you bought the debt?” Ethan croaked.

“I bought the debt,” I confirmed. “And per the terms of the agreement, since you failed to pay, I exercised my right to seize the collateral.”

I paused for effect.

“I own the shares, Ethan. All of them. Your father’s legacy? It belongs to me now.”

“No!” Marissa screamed, grabbing his arm. “Ethan, tell her she can’t do that! That’s our inheritance!”

“It was your inheritance,” I corrected. “Until you spent it on handbags and ego.”

The manager approached again, looking more nervous than before. “Ma’am… the payment?”

I smiled at him—a genuine, dazzling smile. “Of course. Charge it to the new account.”

I tapped my phone against the terminal he held. A soft chime.

APPROVED.

The sound echoed like a gavel striking a sounding block. A few tables actually applauded, thinking the drama was over. They were wrong. The drama was just shifting venues.

“You ruined us,” Marissa hissed, her face contorted in ugly, raw hate. “Do you know what this does to the boutique? Investors will pull out when they hear about the share seizure!”

“Oh, they already know,” I cut in gently. “Daniel sent the report to all your partners ten minutes ago. Transparency is key in business, isn’t it?”

Ethan wasn’t angry anymore. He was terrified. He looked at me like I was a stranger, a monster he had accidentally invited into his bed.

“Laya,” he wept, actual tears streaming down his face. “Please. We can fix this. I only did it because I trusted Marissa’s plan. She said the expansion would double our money! Don’t blame me!”

“Don’t blame you?” Marissa snapped, turning on him. “You used Dad’s shares? You told me Laya would never find out! You idiot!”

A silence thundered between them. The alliance was broken. The rats were turning on each other.

I stood up, picking up my clutch.

“Laya, wait,” Ethan begged, reaching for my hand but stopping short of touching me. “We can go home. We can talk about this.”

I stepped back, creating a chasm of distance between us.

“We don’t have a home anymore, Ethan.”
