Diana’s stomach churned at the sound. She hadn’t heard from her parents since the night of the scam call, and the distance felt like a wall between them. “What’s going on?” she asked, trying to keep her voice even.
“We… We’ve been thinking, Diana. About everything that happened,” Patricia’s voice wavered. “And we… we wanted to apologize. We should’ve told you the truth about what happened that night. But it’s just… so hard, you know? We didn’t want to make you worry.”
Diana closed her eyes for a moment, letting the words wash over her, but they felt like a distant echo. The apology felt both too late and somehow incomplete. Her mother had always been the first to push her into family crises, yet now she wanted to apologize for the very thing Diana had spent years trying to escape.
“Mom, I don’t know what you expect me to say,” Diana replied quietly, her voice thick with emotion. “This has been going on for so long. You and Dad always put everything on me. I was the one who had to bail Travis out again and again. I was the one who was always there when things fell apart.”
“I know,” Patricia said, her voice shaking. “And I’m so sorry for that. We’ve realized that we’ve used you as a crutch for far too long. You didn’t deserve that. We didn’t mean to put you in that position.”
Diana could feel the weight of her mother’s words, but a part of her recoiled at the idea of returning to the old patterns. The guilt, the responsibility—it was all too familiar, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to let it back in.
“I appreciate your apology, Mom,” Diana said, her voice steady, “But I need some space. I need to figure out who I am without constantly being the one who fixes everything. I’m not the answer to all of your problems anymore.”
The silence on the other end of the line was thick with unspoken words. Diana’s heart pounded in her chest, but she didn’t pull back from the moment. She had finally spoken her truth.
“I understand,” Patricia finally whispered. “We’ll respect that, Diana. We won’t ask anything of you anymore. We just… we want you to be happy.”
Diana swallowed hard, her throat tight with emotion. “I hope you mean that.”
