Thomas and Linda Carter versus Evelyn Carter.
My own parents.
They were suing me.
The complaint accused me of fraud, unjust enrichment, interference with economic opportunity, and, most absurdly, “breach of familial duty.”
According to them, I had benefited from family resources while deliberately refusing to help my older brother, Mason.
They wanted $250,000.
And my house.
The lawsuit described transferring my home to Mason as “restitution for opportunities stolen.”
My phone rang before I finished reading.
Mom.
“What is this?” I asked.
“Don’t use that tone with me.”
“You’re suing me.”
“You know why.”
“No, actually, I don’t.”
Her voice hardened.
“You’ve been selfish toward Mason for years.”
Then Dad took the phone.
